Within the Order of St Augustine, the Vicariate of the Orient is part of the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in the Philippines (founded in the year 1575), which is based in Spain and serves in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Africa.
Augustinians have served continuously in the Philippines since the year 1565, when Andrés de Urdaneta OSA and four other Augustinians sailed from Mexico and landed at Cebú in the Philippines on 27th April of that year. They at once began a very successful apostolate. The first houses of the Augustinians were established at Cebú in 1565, and at Manila in 1571.
A majority of the members of the Order of St Augustine in the Philippines are now members of the Province of Cebu, a new jurisdiction that began in 1984. The Vicariate of the Orient remains with only two communities at present, one at the historic Intramuros, Manila and the other at Makati, Metro Manila. From Intramuros, the Church of St Agustin is conducted as a parish embracing Baseco, the “poorest of poor” sector of the parish where during four fires in recent years almost all the shanties there were destroyed. A new concrete chapel in honor of San Nicolas de Tolentino had been constructed there; there are now fourteen rudimentary chapels scattered throughout Baseco. It is hoped against hope that the City of Manila may grant or give to the Vicariate some 1,500 square meters for the construction of a church to become the center of all religious activities in Baseco. There are many vices: drugs, the selling of human organs, prostitution, drunkenness, etc.
Most of the people there are sacramentalized. The Sisters of Blessed Mother Teresa are helping in the catechetical preparation of the children for first communion and confirmation; likewise they help prepare the couples for weddings, confessions and baptism. Due to the poverty of people, the parish is doing its best to help alleviate their material needs in cooperation with NGOs and Caritas Manila.
Next to the famed Church of San Agustin at Intramuros, the construction of a large new seminary building was blessed and inaugurated on 29thNovember 2008, to replace a former building destroyed there in World War II. On the Augustinian block of land at Intramuros, the Vicariate also maintains its ancient monastery as a Museum that is considered to have the best collection of religious artifacts in the Philippines.
At present, the Vicariate has only one other venue, Colegio San Agustin at Makati. It is considered to be one the best centers of learning in the secondary level in Metro Manila. It has a student population of around six thousand students of whom eight hundred are foreigners of thirty-three nationalities. To the students it is emphasized very much religious and moral values, academic and Augustinian.
To date, the Vicariate has started the construction of new religious house in the newly acquired forty hectares of land in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. With the help of God, the Vicariate envisages having four new religious houses in Bulacan within a brief number of years: a school which will be named Colegio San Agustin - Bulacan, a parish church, a spirtuality center and novitiate house.
